Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn outlines her vision in report on her 90th day as Prime Minister

Date:

Regarding informal enterprises, she said the government will work hard to integrate underground enterprises into the formal economy and regulate them in accordance with the law. It is estimated that these enterprises account for more than 49% of Thailand's GDP. Addressing the issue would both protect citizens and generate additional revenue for the government, she said.

As for technology, she said the goal is to make Thailand an artificial intelligence hub in the region. As major companies have invested more than 1 trillion baht in building data centers, the government sees huge potential to lead the industry.

As for initiatives her government will roll out in 2025, Paetongtarn announced the reinstatement of the “One District One Scholarship” program, which is funded by revenue from government lottery sales. The initiative also includes the “One District One Summer Camp” project, which will provide Thai children with the opportunity to receive language training overseas. In addition, district schools will be upgraded to model schools with improved teachers and technology to enhance students’ language and artificial intelligence skills.

Go deep into grassroots work

The government will also empower local communities through the Village and Community Development Program (SML Program) under the Village Community Fund, allocating resources and funds to each village. A 5 billion baht fund will also be set up to support the recovery of small businesses, which she said are the backbone of the Thai economy.

As for the “Thai Home” initiative, the government will provide high-quality, fully-furnished apartments at a price of about 4,000 baht per month over 25 years. Apartment sizes start from 30 square meters. Paetongtarn said those who aspire to own homes will be offered 99-year leases.

The Prime Minister also announced the second phase of a 10,000-baht cash payment program targeting about 4 million senior citizens and is expected to be distributed before the Lunar New Year. Phase three for the public will be coming soon, she said.

The Prime Minister ended his speech by pledging to tackle rising household debt, particularly related to car loans and mortgages.

She said that as an emergency measure, special measures will be taken to completely pay off the debts of borrowers who owe less than 5,000 baht.
