Seoul – People Power Party Chairman Han Dong-hoon announced his resignation as leader of the ruling party on Monday and said he did not regret calling on People Power Party lawmakers to vote for Yoon Zheng’s impeachment.
“I will resign as leader of the ruling party,” Han said at a press conference in the National Assembly.
“The collapse of the party's Supreme Committee prevented me from fulfilling my duties. President Yoon Seok-yeol's impeachment was painful, but I do not regret my decision,” he added.
The announcement comes nearly five months after he was elected leader of the People's Power party at its national convention on July 23.
Hanguo-yu has previously said he intends to continue performing his duties despite calls from the pro-Yin faction within the party for his resignation. Several ruling party lawmakers claimed that Han should bear responsibility for passing Yoon Eun-hye's impeachment case in the National Assembly on Saturday.
However, Han Kuo-yu is facing increasing pressure to step down as all five elected members of the ruling party's Supreme Council have expressed their intention to resign in recent days.
The prosecutor-turned-political novice had pushed for Yoon's “orderly resignation” and later pushed ruling party lawmakers to vote in favor of the president's impeachment in Congress in the days leading up to it. On December 3, the opposition coalition filed an impeachment motion over Mr. Yin's botched martial law order.
