As a ban on popular short video app TikTok looms, U.S. users are flocking to new Chinese apps, CNN reported on Tuesday.
China's RedNote, also known as Little Red Book, and Lemon8 have become the two most downloaded apps in the United States this week as TikTok users in the country prepare for the app's shutdown on Sunday.
According to CNN, Chinese users on these apps welcomed American users, calling them “TikTok refugees.” According to CNN, as of Tuesday, the “TikTok Refugees” tag had been viewed nearly 60 million times on RedNote and had more than 1.7 million comments.
CNN said US users were seen posting comments criticizing the US government's stance on TikTok, adding that their use of RedNote “creates an unlikely platform for interaction between Chinese and US users” ”.
Meanwhile, Chinese users “warmly welcomed” American users, with one user quoted as saying “this could be a historic moment.”
