Petaling Jaya – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has defended moves to ease conditions in Datuk Seri Najib’s prison.
The prime minister told the Financial Times that although Najib was found guilty of money laundering in connection with the 1MDB scandal, there was no need for revenge.
“I went through that hell, too, and solitary confinement. I didn't get any food outside except the food in prison.
“But do I need to treat Najib the same way? I say no, I mean, he is the prime minister.
However, Anwar stressed that he would not condone any corruption that occurred under his predecessors, including Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad – recalling his own imprisonment in 1998.
“I was attacked and close to death. I have forgiven and I want to move on,” Anwar said. “But stealing from the public purse – billions – [and] I don't have the power to forgive you. You return the funds to me.
