Pakistan government expresses reservations, surprise at PTI's new demands

Islamabad – The government on Sunday expressed concern over a new demand from PTI leader Asad Qaiser to include an establishment representative in ongoing negotiations, as well as the party’s reluctance to put forward a formal charter of demands.

The PTI's relations with the government and those in power have deteriorated sharply since Imran was imprisoned in multiple cases last year, with protests often escalating into violence amid state repression.

Following the unrest, Imran formed a five-member committee to hold talks with “anyone”, marking a shift in the stance of PTI MPs in parliament. In response, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also formed a committee composed of members of the ruling coalition.

The first meeting between the two sides was held on December 23, and the second meeting was held on January 2.

The government and opposition are expected to meet again next week.
