Chinese auto giant BYD's electric vehicle sales surpassed U.S. rival Tesla for the second time in the final quarter of 2024, according to the South China Morning Post.
BYD beat Tesla by more than 20% in deliveries, according to the South China Morning Post, which noted that the automaker delivered 595,412 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) this quarter.
At the same time, Tesla delivered 495,570 vehicles globally during the same period.
The South China Morning Post pointed out that BYD's shipments increased by 13.1% year-on-year, while Tesla's shipments increased by 2.3% year-on-year.
This is the second time in a quarter that BYD has surpassed Tesla to become the world's largest seller of electric vehicles. The last time it managed to do this was in the final quarter of 2023, but quickly lost its crown over the next three months.
This time, however, the automaker may manage to maintain its advantage given Tesla's sales are slowing under Elon Musk. The U.S. automaker's annual sales fell for the first time last year due to shifting consumer interest, increased competition from BYD and an aging vehicle lineup.
The company's car sales in China still hit a record this year and it maintains a slim lead over BYD.
