The new ratio will be applicable to metropolitan and regional facilities.
The Australian government is introducing legislative amendments to strengthen the nurse and midwife to patient ratio in Victoria.
The new ratio will be applicable to metropolitan and regional intensive care units (ICUs), emergency departments (EDS), high-dependence units, coronary artery care units and maternal wards.
Key changes included the proportion of one-to-one nurse-to-bed ratios in ICUs in all classes, and added team leaders and contact nurses.
The amendment also includes improved staffing in the ED resuscitation compartment during morning shifts, consistent with afternoon and night shifts, and a reduced midwife-to-patient ratio in postpartum and antenatal wards during night shifts.
In addition, it will introduce a responsible nurse in the night shifts of independent high-dependence units and coronary artery care departments.
These amendments follow consultations with nurses, midwives, Australian Federation of Nursing and Midwives, and health services.
