There are only about 2500 dermatologists in the country, many of which are in major cities.
Since its launch in Indonesia in April 2024, PT Media Dokter Investama's Investama (HaloDoc) online skin consultation service has booked 400,000 consultations, with only one dermatologist per 100,000 people.
Halodoc chief marketing officer Fibriyani Elastria told Healthcare Asia that the company also sells over 20,000 product packaging based on skin needs per user.
“We have 20 years of experience working with dermatologists to ensure that each consultation provides the right solution,” she said in a response to the question via email.
She added: “Under Halodoc’s mission to simplify health care, Haloskin offers a broader solution for individuals seeking expert consultation and appropriate skin treatment.”
According to a study released last year by the University of Indonesia’s School of Computer Science, Southeast Asia has only about 2,500 dermatologists and the dermatologist-to-population ratio is about 100,000 people. This is significantly lower than the World Health Organization's recommended rate of dermatologists per 1,000 persons.
Most dermatologists are concentrated in major cities, giving rural areas very limited access to skin care.
According to research and markets, the Indonesian medical aesthetics market is worth US$257.5 million and is expected to grow 11.6% annually to US$495.6 million by 2029.
Elastria said everyone has unique skin conditions and concerns and needs tailored solutions to get the best results. Haloskin aims to provide highly personalized services to all skin types.
“Haloskin provides a comprehensive service that includes consultation, prescription fulfillment of medications and skin care products, and a 14-day free follow-up consultation to assess progress,” she said.
The company has a rigorous selection process that includes evaluating the quality of physician consultation and incorporating user feedback.
“In addition, we make sure we have a shared vision. Through our rigorous selection process, we ensure that Haloskin’s medical partners are highly trusted dermatologists,” Elastria said.
According to Euromonitor International, Indonesia ranks worldwide in skin care awareness despite the lack of dermatologists. Acne is the biggest concern for Gen Y 52% and 69% of Z customers, while signs of aging seem to be Gen X 68% of the main concern.
Another report by mobile research platform JAKPAT last year found that 84% of Indonesian women want brighter skin, but only 48% of Indonesian women feel they have achieved it.
Elastria said Haloskin provides solutions for dark skin, acne and aging symptoms such as wrinkles and dark spots.
“Haloskin’s main focus is to ensure everyone has access to effective, safe and easy-to-use skin care solutions,” she said. “Through continuous innovation and medicine-based approach, Haloskin is ready to be a digital solution for skin health in Indonesia.”
