Jakarta – House Committee Chairman I oversees national defense and security UTUT ADIANTO claimed on Monday that the planned amendment to the Indonesian Army (TNI) law will actually further limit the role of the military in civilian affairs.
Utut, a former chess master and now a senior politician at the Indonesian Democratic Struggle Democratic Party (PDI-P), said in a press conference on Monday that the revision would fill how many civilian positions to active soldiers and aim to curb the potential dual role of TNI in political institutions.
“I say again and again that this amendment will actually limit the role of the military,” Antara quoted Utut.
Legislators also claimed that the House had gathered opinions from the public during the consideration of the plan amendment. “We invited all the parties involved in regards to the issue of participation,” he said.
Committee legislator I have been blasting what civil society groups claim to be a lack of transparency in the consideration of planned amendments to TNI laws.
A group of protesters broke into an interim meeting at a conference room in an upscale hotel in southern Jakarta on Sunday to undermine the meeting between lawmakers and government representatives to discuss new details of TNI law.
The activists also slammed lawmakers' efforts to be busy deliberating TNI's law amendments, doubting new regulations on the military could be passed this week.
