Regulatory transfers may lead to short-term internal equipment shortages.
BMI said it expects medical device companies to continue to prioritize reducing environmental impacts as they work towards net zero goals.
Regulators and manufacturers are expected to work closely to balance sustainability efforts with operational efficiency and product availability.
As regulatory standards develop, especially in emissions and substance use, companies will need to adjust their manufacturing processes to maintain compliance.
“In the short term, regulatory shifts could lead to temporary equipment shortages as manufacturers adjust their operations to meet new standards,” the report said.
Meanwhile, innovative practices are expected to drive sustainability in the medium to long term, especially by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
A noteworthy example is Thermo Fisher Scientific’s 10-year virtual power procurement agreement with international renewable energy developer X-Elio.
It added: “The agreement aims to enhance the opportunity to access renewable electricity throughout the pharmaceutical and healthcare supply chain, thus adding 118 megawatts of solar power to Thermo Fisher Scientific’s operations.”
