Vietnamese billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong's Vingroup sells AI adventure to Qualcomm

Vingroup – controlled by billionaires Pham Nhat Vuongthe wealthiest person in Vietnam – has sold its Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) division to US chip maker Qualcomm.

The San Diego, California-based company said in a statement that Qualcomm obtained Movianai artificial intelligence applications and research, but did not disclose the amount. Movianai is part of Vinai Application and Research JSC’s former bio-AI department, part of Vingroup, the largest conglomerate in Vietnam.

“By attracting high-quality talent from Vinai, we are enhancing our ability to deliver state-of-the-art AI solutions that will benefit a wide range of industries and consumers,” said Jilei Hou, senior vice president of engineering at Qualcomm. The acquisition will help make Qualcomm “the driving force behind the next wave of AI innovation.”

Hung Bui, founder and CEO of Vinai, had previously been Google Deepmindwill be added to Qualcomm as part of the transaction. He builds Vinai expertise in generative AI, machine learning, computer vision and natural language processing.

Qualcomm said it has been building its AI R&D capabilities internally to create advanced AI solutions for smartphones, computers and vehicles.

“We are ready to contribute to Qualcomm’s mission to make breakthroughs in basic AI research and expand them across industries,” Hong said. “Our team’s expertise in generating AI and machine learning will help accelerate the development of innovative solutions that can change the way we live and work.”

The U.S. tech giant said it has been working with the Vietnamese technology ecosystem for the past two decades to create and deliver innovative solutions. Its innovation in the fields of 5G, AI, IoT and automotive helps to enhance Vietnam's information and communication technology industry and places Vietnamese companies globally.
