Hospitals win the annual Public Health Initiative – Philippines category.
The Capitol Medical Center (CMC) has received the Public Health Initiative of the Year – the Philippines received the 2025 award ceremony at the prestigious Health Care Asia Awards Ceremony, which is its comprehensive, community-based pediatric primary health care program. The program enables pediatric residency training graduates to manage disease skills at the community level and refer complex cases to expert recommendation centers if necessary.
Since 2011, the CMC Department of Pediatrics has worked with Barangay Paligsahan to work with health workers and Barangay officials to address local health issues. The program effectively monitors its impact using health center records, logs, anthropometric data operated by Timbang annually, regular health assessment surveys, and stakeholder feedback. The pediatric residency program trainees play a key role in identifying children with special needs and assisting families in managing health issues and accessing necessary health care services.
The program focuses on addressing existing pediatric health issues such as malnutrition, respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases, delayed development, improper feeding habits, juvenile pregnancy, high-risk behaviors and child abuse. These issues are managed through a range of primary health care services, including community health surveys, health center visits, family visits, child protection and youth health seminars, breastfeeding, nutrition and children’s health care support, educational lectures, and expert recommendations. All activities are supervised by pediatric experts and are presented to the department during scheduled meetings.
In 2022, the CMC Pediatrics Division developed a training module for Barangay health workers and volunteers, focusing on primary health care for children aged 0 to 5 years. This manual is based on well-known training resources, including the Technical Education and Skills Development Agency (TESDA) manual, the Ministry of Health (DOH) training manual, and the World Health Organization's integrated management of childhood diseases (IMCI) and community-based IMCI manual.
On May 31, 2024, a six-day training program was conducted for community health volunteers and successfully ended on July 3, 2024. The training ended with a workshop and a certificate allocation of 14 participants.
This partnership between CMC and Barangay Paligsahan is designed to strengthen universal healthcare programs by not only attracting healthcare professionals, but also participating in dedicated community volunteers.
The Asian Healthcare Award redefines the standard of excellence in the region through innovative solutions and significant contributions to its communities. CMC's achievements underline its strong commitment to improving primary pediatric health care.
