Singapore – On May 3, Singaporeans will vote in the general election, which will be held against the backdrop of unprecedented global economic instability.
The election date is the first time that Mr. Lawrence Wong is ruling Prime Minister and Secretary-General of Pap, announced on April 15. It was the next hour after President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who later revoked Singapore's 14th parliament and later announced an election writ.
The nomination day will be held on April 23, offering candidates a minimum of 9 days of campaigning, then before cooling day on May 2. The deposits they have to pay remain unchanged compared to the 2020 election at $13,500.
Prime Minister Wang said in a social media post after the writ that the election was called so Singaporeans could decide to lead the country.
He added: “The global conditions that have made Singapore successful may no longer hold over the past few decades.”
The return officer for this election is Mr. Han Cork Juan, Director-General of the Civil Aviation Administration of Singapore. There will be nine nomination centers.
The Elections Department issued a seven-page statement reminding candidates to comply with laws regarding campaigning during the Hound and to prevent foreign intervention.
“The outcome of the Singapore election must be decided only by Singaporeans,” it said. “The candidates must therefore play their role to mitigate the risk of becoming a medium of foreign intervention or victims.”
The Singapore Cybersecurity Agency also warns people to be alert to cyber threats, such as phishing attempts and false social media accounts to spread false information.
Singapore's 14th election will take place in all 97 seats in 33 constituencies – 18 panels representing constituencies and 15 single seats – all of which may be challenged.
The ruling party will be in more than 30 faces – the largest slate in recent years.
This will face another tough struggle from the opposition, which has achieved greater political checks and balances in a larger appetite over the years, as well as more alternative voices in parliament.
In 2020, Pap returned to power with 61.23% of the vote, but the second time GRC – Sengkang – lost to WP. Party chief Pritam Singh was subsequently appointed as leader of the opposition.
WP may seek to win at least 30 seats in the East. In addition to defending its Hougang single seats and nine seats in Aljunied and Sengkang GRC, WP looks to be participating in five additional constituencies, including the new Punggol GRC.
On April 15, the party launched the slogan for the general election: “Work for Singapore.” It said in its social media post that the slogans may have changed over the years, but its mission remains the same.
It added: “The Workers' Party is proud to contribute to the unity of diversity. Our voice is designed to represent the Singapore population while working towards the First World Parliament.”
Singapore Progressive Party will run for candidates in at least five constituencies. It held a meeting on the evening of April 15 to discuss plans after the election schedule was confirmed. Party head Leong Mun Wai told reporters that his candidates will be confirmed in the next few days.
PSP's A team is expected to be carried out at the West Grc on the West Coast West – the existing West Coast GRC and the adjacent winning part of the GRC. In the 2020 general election, a team led by party founder and chairman Tan Cheng Bock won 48.32% of the vote on the West Coast. This is the narrowest victory for the cervix brain.
The smaller opposition parties have also placed overlapping claims on the ground. This sets the stage for multi-angle combat in multiple fields unless the parties agree quickly.
One consideration for voters will be the imminent uncertainty raised by the two largest economies in the world (the United States and China) as they opened the trade war. Over the past few years, bread and phase-out issues – cost of living, job security and ongoing affordability of public housing – have also dominated the nationwide dialogue.
Inflation peaked at 6.1% in 2022, but adjusted to 4.8% in the following year before further dropping to 2.4% in 2024. The recent budget has seen that Prime Minister Pm Wong, who is also the finance minister, has taken extensive measures to soften higher prices. The question is whether external events, such as new U.S. tariffs, will trigger global price increases.
Resident employment increased in 2024, a shift in the decline in the previous year. But graduates after college also found it difficult to find full-time jobs and laid off jobs last quarter.
To cope with the jitters of work, resources have been poured into the skill phenomenon movement to help workers adapt to changing industry needs and a new program has been launched to support those who have lost their jobs and are struggling to rebound.

Prices of resale home apartments have risen after the pandemic-induced supply tightening, with small but increasing numbers of apartments taking place for $1 million or more. Both public and private housing prices show moderate early signs of the first quarter of 2025 following efforts to increase supply and cooling markets.
Political scandals that shaking parties on both sides of the aisle could also cast a shadow on the ballot box. These included two extramarital matters, the latter arrested former Cabinet Secretary S. Iswaran after an investigation by the corrupt Bureau of Investigation, and the trial involving Mr Singh, who was charged with lying to the Parliamentary Committee.
ISWARAN pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months in prison.
Mr Singh was found guilty and fined after 13 days of trial, but appealing his sentence did not affect his eligibility to represent the election.
PAP has begun introducing its candidates through constituencies and will continue to do so in the coming days, as is WP and PSP hope to do so. However, all parties may still bring surprises on the nomination day, when the slate must be completed.
This year will also see the return of the body gathering – due to the 1920 pandemic, it was not allowed in 2020, which was seriously started after the nomination was over on April 23.
