Original Practice and Enduring Cultural Authority

Culture moved through specificity: the strongest work travelled without surrendering the language, form or history that made it distinct.

Cinema, streaming drama, K-pop, South Asian sound, animation, manga, literary prizes, and diaspora performance all produced major international signals.

International influence must be observable through artistic work, 2022 relevance, cross-border cultural movement, critical authority, audience intensity, and durable signature

The 2022 edition is intentionally more volatile than the 2021 edition. Everything Everywhere All at Once, RRR, Decision to Leave, Pachinko, Joyland, Turning Red, Pasoori, Vulture Prince, NewJeans, and the renewed force of Asian pop solo work changed the yearly field enough to require a genuine reshuffle.

How we ranked Asia's Artists 100

Candidates were assessed across Original practice, Cultural consequence, Quality and progression, Audience relationship and Cross-border resonance. Reporting centred on work attributable to 2022, with earlier achievements used only to establish context. Editors reviewed the top tier and the cut line before publication. Advertising, sponsorship, wealth and visibility had no bearing on the order.

0120%

Original practice

FigureAsia examined the distinctiveness, discipline and authorship of the artist's work, judged across a body of practice rather than one moment of attention. The 2022 assessment considered scale, durability, direct attribution and the conditions under which the outcome was achieved.

0217%

Cultural consequence

FigureAsia examined the work's power to change conversation, representation, form or the space available to other Asian creators. The 2022 assessment considered scale, durability, direct attribution and the conditions under which the outcome was achieved.

0315%

Editorial gates

The line every candidate had to clear.

Reputation opened the file. It did not secure a place. Every name was tested against the same editorial standards before the ranking was set.

Defined professional eligibility

The candidate must be an active creator with a substantive body of work and an identifiable Asian connection; celebrity detached from artistic contribution is insufficient.

Substantive Asian connection

Eligibility requires an Asian origin, identity, operating base or body of work of sufficient depth to make the candidate part of Asia's contemporary record; incidental market exposure is not enough.

The year in view

Work and decisions attributable to 2022 determined eligibility. Earlier achievements supplied context, not position.

Consequence before visibility

FigureAsia requires evidence of material contribution. Publicity, title, wealth, audience size, fundraising, office or reputation may inform context but never establishes eligibility or rank on its own.

Integrity and publication review

Candidates must pass identity, factual coherence, integrity, rights and publication-risk review. FigureAsia may exclude, defer, correct or remove an entry where the record is materially incomplete, misleading or incompatible with responsible publication.
