Laufey

Laufey's third album, A Matter of Time, completed a period in which her hybrid musical language moved further into mainstream circulation. Born in Reykjavík and raised between Iceland and the United States, the Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter is also a pianist, cellist and guitarist. Her training and family musical background inform the work, but FigureAsia's assessment begins with what she finished: an album released on 22 August 2025, a United Kingdom top-ten entry and a 2026 Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.

The record extends an approach built from jazz standards, bossa nova, classical texture and contemporary pop songwriting. Laufey does not present those references as historical display. Conversational phrasing, compact song forms and a close vocal perspective make older harmonic and orchestral vocabularies immediate to younger listeners. She writes the central songs and supplies the defining voice and multi-instrumental identity, while producers, arrangers, orchestral musicians and family collaborators remain properly credited. The album's richness is collective even when its artistic centre is recognisably hers.

A Matter of Time followed the Grammy-winning Bewitched and therefore provides a meaningful test of durability. Laufey had to develop an established language rather than repeat the surface of a breakthrough. Its chart performance and award indicate that both audiences and industry peers continued to respond. Her significance is not the exaggerated claim that she revived jazz or classical music alone. It is the creation of a coherent songwriting practice in which those traditions coexist with contemporary emotional directness and digital-era circulation. At 26 on the eligibility date, she combines composition, instrumental literacy, vocal character and demonstrable cross-market transmission. The completed album, rather than a general story about crossover, is the substantive centre of her ranking.
